Dot Symbol Meanings

A dot is a shape, not a meaning. The same small circle can start a list, separate two words, mean “multiply”, mark a missing word or stand for a conclusion. This guide explains what each common dot symbol actually does — and how to pick the right one.

Confusion usually starts with the three lookalikes: •,· and ⋅. They can look almost identical at 12px, but they are different characters with different Unicode names and different jobs. The table below is the quick answer; the sections after it go into the details.

The bullet: a dot with a job

The bullet • (U+2022) is the default marker for an unordered list. It is deliberately sized and positioned to sit beside a line of text, slightly above the baseline, so it reads as a marker rather than as punctuation. Browsers, word processors and presentation apps insert it automatically when you start a bulleted list.

Unicode also has variant bullets for nested lists and decorative layouts: ‣ (triangular), ⁃ (hyphen), ◦ (white) and a family of circled bullets. They all do the same job — mark an item — with a different visual weight. Browse the full bullet point symbols category if you need alternatives.

A bullet is not a separator. If you want items on one line, use the middle dot ·; if you want a numbered list, use numbers. Mixing the roles is the most common dot mistake.

The middle dot: punctuation between things

The middle dot · (U+00B7), or interpunct, sits at the height of a lowercase x and separates items without the finality of a comma. English uses it in dictionaries, in some personal names and in compact metadata such as “design · code · coffee”.

Two language-specific uses matter. In Catalan, the middle dot is part of the spelling of ela geminada: l·l marks two separate l sounds, as in col·legi. In Japanese, the katakana middle dot ・ (U+30FB) separates foreign names and list items, for example ジョン・スミス. Chinese typography often uses · or ・ between the parts of a transcribed foreign name.

The middle dot is also a common separator in usernames, bios and titles. Keep it consistent: either put a space on each side or on neither, but do not mix the two styles in one line. The dot separator builder makes this automatic.

The ellipsis: dots that leave something out

The horizontal ellipsis … (U+2026) is a single character for three dots. It marks omitted words in a quotation, a trailing thought, a pause, or a menu item that opens another screen (“More…”). In mathematics, the midline form ⋯ (U+22EF) sits on the math axis, and the vertical form ⋮ (U+22EE) shows omitted rows in a matrix or table.

Typing three periods is acceptable in plain text, but the dedicated character keeps the spacing even and is the correct choice for typographic work. Do not add a fourth dot: “....” is almost always a mistake, not an emphasis.

Mathematical dots: operators, not decoration

In mathematics the dot is a working symbol. The dot operator ⋅ (U+22C5) means multiplication, especially where × would be confused with the letter x. The bullet operator ∙ (U+2219) is the heavier form used for the dot product. The circled dot ⊙ (U+2299) is a generic circled operator whose exact meaning is defined by the field.

Logic uses three-dot triangles: ∴ (therefore) introduces a conclusion and ∵ (because) introduces a reason. Large operators such as ⨀, ⨁ and ⨂ are the n-ary forms used with limits — direct sums and tensor products are the common examples.

If you are writing prose rather than mathematics, do not borrow these symbols as bullets. They carry mathematical meaning and may confuse readers who know the notation. See the math dot symbols category for the full set.

Dots in punctuation around the world

The full stop is not universal. English uses . (U+002E); Chinese and Japanese use the hollow ideographic full stop 。 (U+3002); Thai uses ฯ as an abbreviation mark; Khmer uses ។ and ៕; Urdu and other Arabic-script languages use ۔. Using the wrong full stop is a visible typographic error, even when the meaning is clear.

Dots also appear inside numerals. Arabic-Indic zero ٠ (U+0660) and extended Arabic-Indic zero ۰ (U+06F0) are written as small dots, and many European languages use a comma rather than a dot as the decimal separator. When you localize a number, localize its punctuation too.

The dot punctuation category collects the full stops, zeros and phonetic dot marks in one place.

Dots above letters

The diaeresis ¨ (U+00A8) is two dots over a vowel showing that it is pronounced separately: naïve, Zoë. In German the same shape is called an umlaut and marks a vowel change: über, schön. The dot above ˙ (U+02D9) is a spacing phonetic mark, and the triangular colon ː (U+02D0) marks a long vowel in the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Do not confuse these spacing marks with combining marks. A combining dot attaches to the preceding letter and changes its rendering; the spacing characters here stand on their own and can be copied like any other symbol.

Dots as pictures: Braille, dice and emoji

Some dot characters are pictures rather than punctuation. Braille patterns such as ⠿ and ⣿ encode raised dots for tactile reading; the Unicode names describe the dots, not letters. Dice faces ⚀–⚅ show pips and are used in games and probability examples. Color circles 🔴 🟢 ⚫ are emoji: they render as artwork rather than text and are ideal for status markers, but they take the emoji font rather than your document’s typography.

Dots in technology: domains, email and files

In a domain name, the dot separates labels: www, dotsymbol and com. The same separator role appears in email addresses (local part @ domain), IP addresses, version numbers and file extensions. This is a structural dot, not a punctuation mark, and it is spoken as “dot” when an address is read aloud.

That is why “dot com” is part of the language of the web — and part of this site’s name. The dot is the smallest structural unit of a domain, just as it is the smallest mark on the page.

How to choose the right dot

Ask what job the dot is doing, then pick the character for that job: list marker → •; separator → ·; omission → …; multiplication → ⋅; conclusion → ∴; picture → ● or 🔴. If you only need something that looks like a dot and carries no meaning, any circle will do visually — but a screen reader may still announce it as punctuation, so do not use a dot as the only separator in an important label.

Meaning questions

What does a dot symbolize?

On its own, a dot has no single meaning. It can mark a list item (•), separate words (·), show omitted text (…), mean multiplication (⋅), mark a conclusion (∴) or represent a decimal point (.). The character and the context decide the meaning.

What is the difference between a dot and a bullet?

A bullet is a specific kind of dot: • (U+2022), designed and positioned to mark items in a list. “Dot” is the general shape; “bullet” is the typographic job. A middle dot · is also a dot, but it is punctuation rather than a bullet.

What does the middle dot mean in Catalan?

In Catalan, the middle dot in l·l (ela geminada) shows that the two l letters are pronounced as two separate l sounds rather than as the digraph ll. The dot is part of the standard spelling, not decoration.

What does ⊙ mean in mathematics?

⊙ is the circled dot operator (U+2299). It is used for various products and binary operations; the exact meaning depends on the field. In some contexts it denotes a vector product, in others a Hadamard product or another custom operation.

Is a period a dot symbol?

Yes. The full stop or period is . (U+002E). It is the most common dot in writing, but it sits on the baseline and ends sentences, while the bullet and middle dot sit higher and have different jobs.

Why do domain names use dots?

The dot separates the labels of a domain name — for example, “www” and “dotsymbol” and “com”. It is a structural separator, not a punctuation mark, and it is spoken as “dot” when an address is read aloud.

What does ∴ mean?

∴ (U+2234 THEREFORE) is three dots in a triangle. In logic and mathematics it introduces a conclusion that follows from the previous statements. Its mirror image ∵ means “because”.
