Using ellipsis symbols & dot marks

Unicode also has a midline ⋯, vertical ⋮, and diagonal ⋰ and ⋱ forms for matrices and tables; one- and two-dot leaders for indexes; and historic punctuation such as ⁘, ⁙ and ⁝. This category also includes the CJK emphasis marks ﹅ and ﹆, which are dot-shaped marks rather than ellipses. CJK typography often shows a six-dot ellipsis (……), made by setting the character twice.
Use … in prose, ⋯ in mathematics and ⋮ for omitted rows. In HTML, … is the named entity. For a “Read more…” label there is no space before the ellipsis; for an omission inside a quotation, square brackets […] can make the edit explicit.

Ellipses & marks questions

The typographic ellipsis is one character, … (U+2026). Three periods (...) are a plain-text substitute, but the spacing is less even and the two forms have different code points.
How do I type an ellipsis?
Windows: Alt+0133 on the numeric keypad. Word: type 2026 and press Alt+X. Mac: Option+; on a US keyboard, or the Character Viewer. HTML: …. On a phone, copy it from this page.
When should I use ⋯ instead of …?
Use ⋯ (U+22EF) when the ellipsis belongs to mathematical notation: it is centred on the math axis rather than sitting on the text baseline.
What does the vertical ellipsis ⋮ mean?
⋮ shows that rows have been omitted from a table, matrix or menu. It is the vertical counterpart of the horizontal ellipsis.
Why are ﹅ and ﹆ in this category?
They are sesame dots, CJK emphasis marks placed beside characters to show emphasis. They are not ellipses, but they are dot-shaped marks used in the same typographic contexts, so they are grouped with the related dot marks here.
